In recent years, Cannabidiol, or CBD, has gained significant attention for its potential health benefits. While much of the focus has been on adults, there is growing interest in exploring the use of CBD for children. In this blog, we will delve into the world of CBD, its potential benefits, safety considerations, and the current state of research. All to help parents make informed decisions about using CBD for their children.

What is CBD? One of the many compounds found in the cannabis plant, it is used to help treat physical and mental symptoms. Unlike its cousin THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not have psychoactive properties. This means it doesn’t cause the “high” associated with marijuana use. Instead, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the body, helping maintain balance and overall well-being.

Potential Benefits for Children:

  1. Epilepsy and Seizures: The most well-established use of CBD in children is for the treatment of certain types of epilepsy. Epidiolex, a CBD-based medication, has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of severe forms of paediatrics epilepsy.
  2. Anxiety and Stress: Some studies suggest that CBD may help manage anxiety and stress in children. However, more research is needed to understand the long-term effects and appropriate dosages.
  3. Sleep Disorders: CBD has been explored for its potential in improving sleep quality. For children with sleep disorders or difficulties, CBD may offer a natural alternative. Consultation with a healthcare professional is crucial before considering any intervention.
  4. Autism & AHD: There have been studies that have shown CBD to have a positive impact on children who suffer from Autism & ADHD. In the study, the participating children were given CBD drops and it was shown that 61% of the children showed an improvement in their behavioural outbreaks. Anxiety & communication improved by 39% and 47% respectively. Disruptive behaviours, were improved by 29%. Again consultation with a healthcare professional is vital, especially if your child is taking other medicine.

Safety Considerations:

  1. Consultation with Healthcare Professionals: Before introducing CBD to a child’s routine, it’s essential to consult with a paediatrician or healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice based on the child’s health, age, and any existing medical conditions.
  2. Quality and Purity of CBD Products: If a decision is made to use CBD, it’s crucial to choose high-quality, third-party tested products. Ensure that the product is free from contaminants and has accurate labelling of CBD content. For example, no CBD product should have more than 0.3% THC & should readily provide their lab results on their site or upon request. Some products, like our THC Free oils, are specifically made so parents do not have to worry about THC content.
  3. Start with Low Dosages: If recommended by a healthcare professional, start with a low dosage and monitor the child’s response. Adjustments can be made based on individual needs and reactions.
  4. Be Mindful of Potential Side Effects: While CBD is generally well-tolerated, some children may experience side effects. For example, drowsiness, changes in appetite, or digestive issues. Monitoring and open communication with healthcare professionals are essential.

Research on CBD for children is still in its early stages, and more studies are needed to establish its safety and efficacy across various conditions. Parents should stay informed about the latest research findings and discuss any concerns with healthcare providers.

CBD for children is a topic that requires careful consideration, consultation with healthcare professionals, and adherence to safety guidelines. While there may be potential benefits, parents should approach the use of CBD for their children with caution. Decisions should be made well-informed and guided by expert advice. Our last wish is to cause harm to any child suffering from the above issues. As research continues to unfold, a balanced and evidence-based approach will be crucial in navigating the landscape of CBD for paediatric use.
