CBD has become well known to help humans with their physical and mental conditions, with 65% of
CBD users take the product to help with a health conditions. Whilst the laws & regulations are
around CBD for humans is relatively clear and legal, it gets very confusing when thinking about CBD
products for pets.

You might be asking yourself “Why would I need to give my pet CBD?”. CBD helps pets feel calmer
and less on edge, by affecting their receptors in the nervous system, as well as reducing any
discomfort they may be feeling. This could come in the form of any pain or seizures your pet may
suffer from, as well as some evidence suggesting it can help with skin conditions if the product is
applied externally. Generally, the symptoms that CBD helps with for humans can also be applied to
pets – anxiety, cancer pain relief, sleep etc.

The legal confusion stems from the fact that CBD retailers are not allowed to sell pet products to
customers, but under the guidance of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), Vets are allowed
to suggest human CBDs for pets that might be suffering from specific ailments- “as there are
currently, no CBD products are authorised in the UK for veterinary use, a veterinary surgeon may
prescribe a legally obtained human CBD product under the provisions of the prescribing cascade.”

Vets will often suggest a CBD product that has no THC within the product, as this may cause some
pets to have an adverse effect to CBD. It is also best to buy organic, natural CBD, that does not
have any added ingredients to ensure that your pet does not have a negative reaction to the
product. I would always recommend that you ask your Vet before considering buying CBD, however
due to the legal limbo that surrounds CBD pet products, they may not go into much detail, but will
certainly provide awareness on the medicinal side as well as letting you know if any current
medication taken by your pet might have a bad reaction to CBD.

There are products that have been designed for pets with CBD, for instance, I have seen specific
salmon-flavoured CBD pills for dogs & cats, as well as a spray to be applied to your pet’s sleeping
area. Whilst in the UK no CBD pet product has been legally allowed to be sold specifically for pets,
there will be plenty of CBD companies & products that are created in mind to help pet owners with
the health of their much-beloved companions. It is important to note that CBD for humans & pets
has no distinction between them.

It is also important to note that if you have bought CBD for your pet, you can simply drop the oils
into their food, apply them externally to their skin or apply to their sleeping surfaces. It is always best to
start off with a low dosage (1-2 drops) and increase if you feel the need to. For example, giving a dog
that might suffer from firework anxiety CBD, you will see if there is a positive reaction from the
product in 30 minutes. Again, as would be the case if you were trying CBD for the 1 st time, low dosage & low percentage is the best way to start your CBD regime with your pet. You can then increase the dosage & percentage if you feel like the regime you’re currently doing is not working for your pet.

We know how much people love their pets and the last thing we would want to do is endanger your
pet with the suggestion of CBD use. There are currently studies ongoing in America & other nations
that are working to see the effects of CBD on dogs and other pets for their various physical and
mental issues. Again, our utmost priority is for the wellbeing and safety of people’s furry family
members, if you have any questions in regards to giving your pet CBD and your own research has left
you still confused, please feel free to reach out to us here at Heiko and we will be more than happy
to help.
